SUMMARY:the star hill method: timber framing essentials
DESCRIPTION:the star hill method: timber framing essentials\nLearn the Star Hill Method by helping build a real timber frame from layout to raise. \nSeptember 16–20\, 2026\nEllsworth\, Wisconsin \nLimited to 8 Students \nMany people want to build a timber frame. \nMost don’t know where to start. \nCommon questions we hear: \n\nWhere do I begin?\nWhat tools do I actually need?\nDo I need to be good at math?\nHow do I know I’m doing it right?\n\nThis class answers those questions by giving you direct experience. \nYou don’t just learn how timber frames are built. \nYou help build one—from layout through joinery and into the test raise. \n\n8 Students. Two Instructors. One Timber Frame.\nWe intentionally keep enrollment small so instruction stays personal\, practical\, and hands-on. \nEvery student participates. \nEvery question gets answered. \nEvery layout line gets reviewed. \nThis isn’t a demonstration. \nIt’s a working project. \nBecause the class is small\, instruction can adapt to your goals and interests. \nWhether you’re planning a cabin\, a home\, a shop\, or simply want to understand timber framing at a deeper level\, you’ll have direct access to instructors throughout the week. \n\nThe Star Hill Method\nThis class is built around the Star Hill Method—a practical approach to timber framing developed through years of designing\, cutting\, teaching\, and raising timber frames. \nThe method is built around a simple belief: \nTimber framing should be understandable. \nMany people assume timber framing requires advanced math\, complicated geometry\, or years of experience before they can begin. \nOur experience has been different. \nWhen the process is clear\, the work becomes approachable. \nThe Star Hill Method provides: \n\nA clear sequence from first timber to test raise\nPhysical references instead of constant calculation\nRepeatable layout and joinery processes\nSystems that reduce uncertainty and increase confidence\nA framework that helps students understand why things work\, not simply how\n\nThroughout the week you’ll learn the thinking behind the method\, not just the steps. \nThe goal isn’t to teach you how to build one timber frame. \nThe goal is to teach you how to approach future timber frames with confidence. \n\nThe Star Hill Layout System\nEvery student receives the Star Hill Layout System as part of their tuition. \nThe system includes: \n\nEZB\nEZL\nEZC\n\nManufactured from 304 stainless steel\, the layout system is built for long-term shop use and is the same system we use daily at Star Hill Timberworks. \nRather than relying on calculations or complex geometry\, the system provides physical references that allow students to transfer information directly to the timber with speed\, consistency\, and accuracy. \nUsed together\, the Star Hill Method and the Star Hill Layout System create a workflow that helps students focus on understanding timber framing rather than fighting through unnecessary complexity. \n\nBuild Something Real\nThis is not a bench class. \nNearly all of your time is spent working on a full timber frame structure. \nStudents participate in: \n\nFull layout\nJoinery layout\nCutting and fitting\nAssembly and adjustment\nTest raising as a crew\n\nEverything you cut is part of the frame. \nStanding inside a structure you helped build changes what you believe you’re capable of. \n\nTools & Workflow\nTimber framing isn’t one thing\, and we don’t teach it as such. \nDuring the class\, students are exposed to: \n\nTraditional hand-tool timber framing\nMid-level power-tool workflows\nProduction-oriented power-tool systems\n\nThe goal isn’t to tell you what tools to buy. \nThe goal is to help you understand why you would choose one approach over another. \nBy the end of the class\, students aren’t guessing about tools. \nThey leave knowing: \n\nWhich tools matter for their goals\nWhich tools can wait\nHow different tools affect workflow\, accuracy\, and pace\n\n\nTuition & Registration\nTuition for The Star Hill Method: Foundations is $3\,000. \nTuition includes: \n\nFive days of hands-on instruction\nParticipation in a full timber frame build\nInstruction in the Star Hill Method\nThe Star Hill Layout System\n\nEZB\nEZL\nEZC\n\n\nDigital Timber Framing Practices Manual\nDigital class plans\nLunch each day\n\nRegistration requires a non-refundable $700 reservation payment. \nThe reservation payment secures your seat in the class. \nThe remaining balance is due 30 days before class. \nAdditional package options are available for students who wish to include edge systems\, cutting systems\, manuals\, and other tools with their registration. \n\nTicket Options\nFoundations\n$3\,000 \nIncludes: \n\nClass tuition\nStar Hill Layout System\nEZB\nEZL\nEZC\nDigital manual\nDigital plans\nLunch each day\n\nFoundations + Beginner Edge System\n$3\,539 \nIncludes: \n\nEverything in Foundations\nBeginner Edge System\n\nFoundations + Full Edge System\n$4\,075 \nIncludes: \n\nEverything in Foundations\nFull Edge System\n\nFoundations + Cutting System\n$3\,293 \nIncludes: \n\nEverything in Foundations\nCutting System\n\nFoundations + Complete Shop Package\n$4\,564 \nIncludes: \n\nEverything in Foundations\nFull Edge System\nCutting System\nPoly Shop Manual\nMarking Knife\n\nPackage pricing includes a 10% discount on eligible add-on products. \nThe discount has already been applied to the ticket prices shown above. \nPackage pricing may not be combined with other offers\, discounts\, promotions\, coupon codes\, or special pricing programs. \n\nInvoicing & Shipping\nOnce final payment has been received: \n\nYour Star Hill Layout System ships directly to your home\nAny selected edge systems ship directly to your home\nCutting systems ship directly to your home\nMarking knives ship directly to your home\n\nStudents are welcome to bring their systems and tools if they choose. \nHowever\, it is not required. \nMany students travel by air and prefer not to transport tools. \nThe shop is fully equipped\, and we’ll have everything needed for the week available at class. \n\nManuals & Plans\nStudents receive: \n\nDigital Timber Framing Practices Manual\nDigital copy of the timber frame plan built during class\n\nThe manual documents: \n\nThe Star Hill Method\nLayout logic\nSequencing\nCutting workflow\nFitting and assembly methods\n\nThe digital manual is provided before class so students can become familiar with the process before arriving. \nA printed poly shop manual is available through selected ticket packages. \n\nMeals\, Lodging & Travel\nLunch is provided each day of the workshop. \nStudents are responsible for breakfast\, dinner\, lodging\, and transportation. \nLodging\nDavid’s Lodge and Inn is located approximately 5 miles from the shop in Ellsworth. \nRed Wing\, Minnesota is located approximately 11 miles from the shop and offers a wide variety of hotels\, inns\, vacation rentals\, restaurants\, coffee shops\, and other amenities. \nAdditional lodging options can be found through the Red Wing tourism website. \nTravel\nStar Hill Timberworks is located approximately one hour southeast of Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport (MSP). \nStudents flying to class should plan to rent a vehicle or arrange transportation in advance. \nUber\, Lyft\, and other rideshare services are generally available in the Twin Cities but are often limited in our area and should not be relied upon for transportation to and from the shop. \n\nWhat To Bring\n\nSafety glasses\nHearing protection\nGloves\nSturdy footwear\nWeather-appropriate clothing\n\nMost of the work takes place outdoors under cover. \nWe do have shop space available\, but students should plan on spending much of the week outside and dress accordingly. \nLayers are recommended\, especially during spring and fall classes when temperatures can change throughout the day. \nNo prior experience required. \nJust curiosity and a willingness to work. \n\nCancellation & Refund Policy\nRegistration requires a non-refundable $700 reservation payment. \nThe reservation payment secures your seat in the class and is not refundable. \nThe Star Hill Layout System\, edge systems\, cutting systems\, marking knives\, manuals\, and other products are separate from class tuition. \nOnce final payment has been received and products have been shipped\, those products become the property of the student and are not refundable through the class cancellation process. \nCancellations More Than 60 Days Before Class\nAll class tuition paid beyond the non-refundable $700 reservation payment will be refunded. \nAny shipped products are excluded from the refund and remain the property of the student. \nCancellations 30–60 Days Before Class\n50% of any class tuition paid beyond the non-refundable $700 reservation payment will be refunded. \nAny shipped products are excluded from the refund and remain the property of the student. \nCancellations Less Than 30 Days Before Class\nCancellations made less than 30 days before the class start date are non-refundable. \nAny shipped products remain the property of the student. \nSubstitute Students\nIf a student is unable to attend\, a substitute student may attend in their place with prior approval from Star Hill Timberworks. \nAll substitutions must be approved before the first day of class. \nClass Cancellation by Star Hill Timberworks\nIf Star Hill Timberworks cancels a class\, all class tuition payments received will be refunded. \nThe Star Hill Layout System\, edge systems\, cutting systems\, marking knives\, manuals\, and other shipped products are separate purchases and are not refundable as part of a class cancellation. \nStar Hill Timberworks is not responsible for lodging\, travel expenses\, airfare\, lost wages\, or other incidental costs. \n\nWhat You Leave With\nStudents don’t leave inspired. \nThey leave oriented. \nYou walk away with: \n\nExperience working on a real timber frame structure\nAn understanding of the Star Hill Method\nHands-on experience using the Star Hill Layout System\nA workflow you trust and can repeat\nClarity around tools\, methods\, and next steps\nConfidence that comes from having done the work\n\nFor many students\, this is the moment when building a timber frame stops being a dream and starts being a plan. \n\n8 students. \nTwo instructors. \nOne timber frame. \nThe Star Hill Method. \nBuild. Remember. Repeat. \n— Jon at Star Hill Timberworks
